Day 106 of 180 · Social studies: Getting around, then and now · Science: Birds · about 110 minutes

Reading25 min

New: or and ore

  1. This week: or and ore. Or and ore both say /or/, as in corn and more.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: for, corn, horn and fork.
  3. Your child finds a or and ore word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing15 min

A horse and a car

  1. Write how traveling by horse and by car are the same and different.
  2. To compare, your child writes how two things are the same and how they are different, with words like both and but.
Math25 min

Longest to shortest

  1. Line up a pencil, a spoon and a shoe at one end, side by side.
  2. Put them in order from shortest to longest, and say it as a sentence: the shoe is the longest.
Science10 min

A bird tally

  1. Watch out a window for ten minutes and make a tally mark for each bird you see.
  2. Your child draws what they saw in a science notebook and writes one sentence about it.
Social studies20 min

How we get around

  1. List every way your family travels in a month: walking, car, bus, bike, train or plane.
  2. Make a tally chart of the trips you take this week.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The First Flight

  1. Read “The First Flight” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
