Which letter?

To: The local school board of your district of residence. · When: Once, when you withdraw your child or choose not to enroll. · Utah's own notice, with the lines its law lists: the letter of intent maker.

What Utah's law asks the notice to give: When you take your child out of school to homeschool, or choose not to enroll, give the local school board of your district of residence a one-time initial notification. It may be a letter of intent. The district keeps a record and must acknowledge receipt within 30 days. You do not send a new notice every year. A family that already notified the board on or before May 7, 2025, including by an affidavit, does not have to do it again. Put each item in the details box, one a line.

Before you send it

  • Read what to file in Utah: the To and By lines there are the ones these letters use, each linked to the law.
  • Keep a copy, and send it a way you can prove: by hand with a dated receipt, by certified mail, or by email if the office accepts it.
  • Taking a child out of school mid-year? See the Utah checklist for the order of steps.
