Kumon workbooks
Kumon Publishing sells workbooks for home use, from pre-K to 8th grade, in basic skills, verbal skills, math skills, thinking skills and science and geography. They follow the step-by-step Kumon Method, so each book breaks a skill into small steps. Newer lines include Kumon Ace, an all-in-one workbook for 1st to 4th grade covering math, language arts, science and social studies in short sections.

- Placement
- No placement test on the publisher’s site when we checked.
What it does well
- Workbooks are low cost (Kumon Ace Third Grade is $14.95), and there are many titles in each skill area.
- Small steps from page to page let a child work with little help once they know the routine.
- Kumon Ace puts several subjects for one grade into one book, in short sections.
- The workbook lines start at pre-K, so a family can begin before kindergarten.
Watch for
- These are practice workbooks, not a full course; there is no teacher's guide or plan for the year.
- Much of the work is repeated practice on paper, which some children find dull.
- The shop sorts books by grade but offers no placement test, so check a book's grade and sample pages before buying.
It fits
A family that wants low-cost, short daily practice on paper for one skill at a time beside another curriculum.
It doesn’t fit
A family looking for a complete curriculum with teaching, or a child who needs hands-on or discussion-led lessons.

What we read, and how we label
Every fact on a card was read on the publisher's own website on the date shown, and the page it came from is linked. A fact we could not confirm there is left out. Costs are for one child and one year of the main package, as the publisher's page showed them that day; prices and sales change. Method and format are the publisher's own description where it gives one. The only thing we say about religion is one label, secular or faith-based, given by the rule above; where the publisher's pages don't settle it, the card has no label.
