Do homeschool transcripts need to be notarized?
No checked state law page asks for one. Of 49 state records, 0 mention notarizing a transcript.
No. Of the 49 state law pages Peabody has checked against statutes and education departments, 0 mention notarizing a homeschool transcript. The parent writes and signs it as the school's administrator. A notary appears elsewhere: Pennsylvania's yearly affidavit is notarized. If a college or program wants a notarized copy, its own page will say so.

This is a plain-words summary, not legal advice. Laws change: check your state's current law and its education department before you act.
What did the count look at?
Every text in each checked record: the notice, instruction, testing and records rules, the notes and the step-by-step guide. The count of records that put a notary near a transcript is 0. New York and Rhode Island are still being checked and are not counted.
Then what gets notarized?
In the checked records, a notary appears with a filing, not a transcript:
| State | What its record says |
|---|---|
| Pennsylvania | File a notarized affidavit with the superintendent of your school district before the home education program starts, and again every year on August 1. It names the person who will teach, each child's name and age, the… |
| Utah | Law change: House Bill 209 (2025) replaced the old signed and notarized affidavit with the one-time notification above. The Utah Code page shows the current version effective 5/7/2025, and the State Board of Education's… |
Who issues a homeschool transcript?
The parent, as the school. Some states say plainly they will not:
| State | What its record says |
|---|---|
| Arkansas | The state does not give diplomas or transcripts to home school students. |
| Delaware | The Department does not issue diplomas or transcripts or validate credentials for nonpublic schools. A student enrolled in a Delaware homeschool is entitled to one free driver education course through an adult education… |
| Maine | The state does not issue grades, credits, diplomas, transcripts or letters of course completion for home instruction, according to the Department. The local school may lend textbooks if it has extra copies. |
What makes a transcript look official?
- The school's name, address and phone at the top.
- Every course, credit and grade, year by year, with the grading scale printed.
- A certification that it is a true and complete record.
- The administrator's name and signature, and the date issued.
- Course descriptions on separate pages.
- The same layout every time you print a copy.
Where might I meet a notary anyway?
Outside the state rules, a school, college or employer may ask for something notarized; ask them what. The College Board's homeschoolers' guide mentions a notary only once: a student with no government ID can have the CLEP student ID form verified by a notary.
Print a signed transcript
The transcript prints the certification, a signature line and a date-issued line. Check what your state does ask in what to file, by state.
