Kindergarten, week 24, day 1

Day 116 of 180 · History: School, then and now · about 70 minutes

Reading20 min

New: s blends

  1. This week: s blends. Two sounds side by side, each still heard: s-t-o-p, s-p-i-n.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: stop, step, spin and spot.
  3. Your child finds a s blends word in a book or on a box at home.
Math20 min

Act it out

  1. Read a story problem: 4 birds sit on a fence, and 3 more land. How many birds?
  2. Act it out with toys, then solve two more.
History15 min

One-room schools

  1. Long ago many children of all ages learned together in one room, with one teacher.
  2. How is that like learning at home?
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Mop Is Sad

  1. Read “Mop Is Sad” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
