Day 76 of 180 · Science: Snow and ice · about 70 minutes

Reading20 min

New sound: z says /z/

  1. Say the sound /z/ together, the sound at the start of zip, zoo and zigzag. Keep it short and crisp, without an "uh" after it.
  2. Show big Z and small z. Trace each with a finger, then write a row of each.
  3. Hunt for three things at home that start with /z/.
Math20 min

Five in two parts

  1. Make 5 with counters in two colors: 4 red and 1 yellow. 4 and 1 make 5.
  2. Flip one counter: now 3 and 2. Keep going.
Science15 min

Water turns to ice

  1. Pour water into an ice cube tray and put it in the freezer.
  2. Check after an hour, then before bed. What changed?
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Lou and the Snow Dad

  1. Read “Lou and the Snow Dad” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
