1st grade, week 8, day 1

Day 36 of 180 · Science: Fall changes · about 85 minutes

Reading25 min

New: -s and -es

  1. This week: -s and -es. -s means more than one (cats); after s, x, sh and ch it is -es, a whole extra beat (boxes).
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: cats, dogs, bugs and hats.
  3. Your child finds a -s and -es word in a book or on a box at home.
Math25 min

Doubles to 20

  1. Learn the doubles from 6 + 6 to 10 + 10.
  2. Roll a die and double what it shows.
Science20 min

Earlier sunsets

  1. Look up the sunset time each day this week, on a calendar or a weather app.
  2. Is it a little earlier each day? Days get shorter in fall.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Why Do Leaves Change Color?

  1. Read “Why Do Leaves Change Color?” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
