New: ck, ng and nk

  1. This week: ck, ng and nk. Ck says /k/ after a short vowel (duck), ng is the sound at the end of ring, and nk is ng plus /k/ (pink).
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: duck, sock, ring and song.
  3. Your child finds a ck, ng and nk word in a book or on a box at home.
Math25 min

Equal means the same as

  1. Draw a balance. Put 3 + 2 on one side and 5 on the other: they balance, so 3 + 2 = 5.
  2. Try 4 + 4 and 9. Do they balance?

Measuring warmth

  1. A thermometer measures how warm the air is.
  2. Read the temperature in the morning and the afternoon this week and write both down.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Mrs. Hedgehog's Umbrella

  1. Read “Mrs. Hedgehog's Umbrella” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
