1st grade, week 34, day 1

Day 166 of 180 · Science: Wind and air · Social studies: The Statue of Liberty and other landmarks · about 110 minutes

Reading25 min

New: -ly

  1. This week: -ly. -ly tells how something is done: slow becomes slowly.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: slowly, quickly, sadly and softly.
  3. Your child finds a -ly word in a book or on a box at home.
Writing15 min

When and where

  1. Write a sentence about the wind, then add when and where it happened.
  2. To revise, your child adds details: a describing word, a when, or a why. Two added details make a piece stronger.
Math25 min

Add or take away?

  1. Read a story problem and decide first: is something joining, or going away?
  2. Solve three: one adding, one taking away, and one your child picks.
Science20 min

Air is real

  1. Push an upside-down cup straight down into a bowl of water. Why doesn't the inside fill up?
  2. Tip the cup and watch the bubble come out: that was air.
Social studies10 min

The Statue of Liberty

  1. Find New York Harbor on a map, where the Statue of Liberty stands holding her torch high.
  2. Afterward, your child draws today's activity and writes one sentence about it.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: The North Wind and the Sun

  1. Read “The North Wind and the Sun” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
