1st grade, week 2, day 1

Day 6 of 180 · Science: My five senses · about 85 minutes

Reading25 min

New: short o and u

  1. This week: short o and u. O as in hot and u as in sun: one short vowel between consonants.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: hot, mop, dog and log.
  3. Your child finds a short o and u word in a book or on a box at home.
Math25 min

Counting on

  1. 8 + 2: start at 8 and count on 2: 9, 10.
  2. Always start from the bigger number: 2 + 8 is quicker as 8 + 2.
Science20 min

Observing like a scientist

  1. Pick one object, such as an orange. Write one thing about it for each sense.
  2. Scientists use their senses to observe. Which sense told you the most?
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Hum Under My Hand

  1. Read “Hum Under My Hand” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. This one is true. Afterward, ask: what is one new thing you learned? Then find one more fact in it together.
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
