1st grade, week 1, day 1

Day 1 of 180 · History: All about me · about 85 minutes

Reading25 min

New: short a and i

  1. This week: short a and i. A as in cat and i as in sit: one short vowel between consonants.
  2. Read these words together, running a finger under each one as you say it: cat, map, bag and jam.
  3. Your child finds a short a and i word in a book or on a box at home.
Math25 min

Counting past 100

  1. Count to 100 together, then keep going: 101, 102, all the way to 120.
  2. Point to each number on the hundreds chart, then write 101 to 120 on a strip below it.
History20 min

My timeline

  1. Make a timeline of your child's life so far: born, first steps, first word, starting school.
  2. Put a photo or a drawing at each point, in order.
Read-aloud15 min

Read-aloud: Eeyore's Birthday

  1. Read “Eeyore's Birthday” aloud. It is above what your child reads alone, on purpose: hearing longer stories builds words and understanding.
  2. Before reading, look at the title and the first page and ask: what do you think this story is about?
  3. On the read-along you can show the pages on a big screen, or let it read the words aloud while each one lights up.
