Withdrawing from school to homeschool in Wyoming

How to take your child out of school to homeschool in Wyoming, step by step: what to file first, what to tell the school, and a letter to print.

This is general information, not legal advice; check your state's own page. Laws change, and Wyoming's own statute and education department are the final word. The links below go straight to them.

Step by step

  1. Before your child's last day, do what Wyoming asks of a new homeschool. Since July 1, 2025 a home-based program no longer has to send its curriculum to the local school district (House Bill 46). The statute names no yearly notice to file. If you take a child under 18 out of a school district without having told the district that you are enrolling the child in a home-based program, you must meet in person with a school counselor or administrator and give written consent to the withdrawal.Source: Wyoming Department of Education: Homeschooling
  2. Tell the school. If you have not told the district you are enrolling your child in a home-based program: To take a child under 18 out of a district school, you meet in person with a school counselor or administrator and give written consent to the withdrawal.Source: Wyoming Department of Education: Homeschooling
  3. Ask for your child's records (report cards, test results, any evaluations or plans) so you know where your child stands. Good practice, not a legal step.
  4. If your child has an IEP or a 504 plan, ask the district before you leave what, if anything, it offers homeschooled students, and get a copy of the plan. Good practice, not a legal step.
  5. Keep copies of everything you send and anything you get back, with the dates. Good practice, not a legal step.
  6. Start your records on day one. We did not find a record-keeping rule for home-based programs in the Wyoming statute or on the Department of Education's homeschooling page. Since July 1, 2025 the curriculum no longer goes to the school district.Source: Wyoming Department of Education: Homeschooling

What Wyoming's law or education agency says about leaving school

To take a child under 18 out of a district school without having notified the district of a home-based program or other enrollment, the parent meets in person with a school counselor or administrator and gives written consent to the withdrawal. The consent includes a separate provision on releasing the student's name and address to the Wyoming national guard youth challenge program for recruitment.

A letter to the school

Fill this in and print it. It tells the school your child is leaving to be taught at home and asks for the records. It is not the state's notice.

For example a copy of your notice, or the acknowledgement the state sent you.

Nothing you type here is saved or sent.
