Tennessee asks for a notice: Any time in the first year; before the school year starts each year after., to Your local school district (its home school coordinator).. Below are that notice, the letter to the school your child is leaving, and the letters for when homeschooling ends or you move.

Checked October 27, 2026. Information, not legal advice: Tennessee's statute and education department are the final word.

Which letter?

To: Your local school district (its home school coordinator). · When: Any time in the first year; before the school year starts each year after. · Tennessee has its own form: Intent to Home School form (your local school district). Send that; this letter can go with it as a cover note.

What Tennessee's law asks the notice to give: For an independent home school, file an Intent to Home School form with your local school district, along with proof the parent-teacher has a high school diploma or equivalency credential. There is no deadline the first time. Each later year a new form must go in before the school year starts. The district may use its own electronic form. Legal guardians must show proof of guardianship. Put each item in the details box, one a line.

Before you send it

  • Read what to file in Tennessee: the To and By lines there are the ones these letters use, each linked to the law.
  • Keep a copy, and send it a way you can prove: by hand with a dated receipt, by certified mail, or by email if the office accepts it.
  • Taking a child out of school mid-year? See the Tennessee checklist for the order of steps.
