Texas ESA and voucher money for homeschoolers
Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA): what taking the money does to your homeschool status, then the amount, who can apply, what it buys and how vendors are approved.
This is general information, not legal advice; check your state's own page. Laws change, and Texas's own statute and education department are the final word. The links below go straight to them.

What taking the money does to your homeschool status
A program is open to homeschool families. We did not find a TEFA page that says the money changes your legal status as a home school. A child in the program stays eligible until graduating, enrolling in a Texas public or charter school, or leaving the state.
- How much
- $2,000 a year for a child who is homeschooled, paid in full at the start of the year (private school students get more, paid in parts).Source: Texas Comptroller: Education Freedom Accounts FAQ; Texas Comptroller: Texas Education Freedom Accounts (program site)
- Who can apply
- Children who could attend a Texas public school, including homeschooled children. Awards are not first come, first served: applications are put in priority groups, with children with a disability in households at or under 500% of the federal poverty guidelines first.Source: Texas Comptroller: Texas Education Freedom Accounts (program site); Texas Education Freedom Accounts: Families
- What it can pay for
- Approved education expenses bought through the program marketplace, including private tutoring, academic assessments and educational therapies; computers and software up to 10 percent of the money. The money may not pay a family member.Source: Texas Education Freedom Accounts: Families
- How vendors and providers are approved
- Providers and vendors apply at any time; the Comptroller reviews each application before it appears in the marketplace. Odyssey helps run the program.Source: Texas Education Freedom Accounts: Providers and vendors; Texas Comptroller: Texas Education Freedom Accounts (program site)
- How and when to apply
- The 2026–27 window ran February 4 to March 31, 2026 and is closed; families in the program confirm each year instead of reapplying. When we checked, the site was taking names for an interest list.Source: Texas Comptroller: Texas Education Freedom Accounts (program site); Texas Education Freedom Accounts: Families
The program's own page: Texas Education Freedom Accounts (TEFA). Programs change their amounts, dates and rules every year, so read the current handbook before you apply or spend.
Before you decide
- Read what the money changes first. In some states taking it means you are no longer homeschooling under the homeschool law, and the program's own rules (an agreement, tests, a learning plan) apply instead.
- Keep every receipt and the program's approval emails; programs ask for them.
- Peabody Teach is free and sells nothing, so it is not a vendor in any program and has no stake in what you buy. There are no affiliate links on this page.

Checked on October 29, 2026. This is general information, not legal advice. Laws and forms change; confirm a date with your school district or the state agency before you rely on it.
