What Maryland's law asks the notice to give: Sign the home instruction notification form your local school system uses and submit it to the local school superintendent at least 15 days before starting. Each year after, before the school year begins, tell the local superintendent (or your supervising nonpublic school or institution) that you are continuing. Report any change in status during the year. Put each item in the details box, one a line.

Before you send it

  • Read what to file in Maryland: the To and By lines there are the ones these letters use, each linked to the law.
  • Keep a copy, and send it a way you can prove: by hand with a dated receipt, by certified mail, or by email if the office accepts it.
  • Taking a child out of school mid-year? See the Maryland checklist for the order of steps.
