Maine homeschool letters
The letters a family sends, addressed and ready to print. Nothing you type is saved or sent.
Maine asks for a notice: First year: within 10 days of withdrawing, or by September 1; later years: by September 1., to Your superintendent's office (which also notifies the Department).. Below are that notice, the letter to the school your child is leaving, and the letters for when homeschooling ends or you move.
Checked October 27, 2026. Information, not legal advice: Maine's statute and education department are the final word.
State letters 0.1.0 · nothing you type is saved or sent
To: Your superintendent's office (which also notifies the Department). · When: First year: within 10 days of withdrawing, or by September 1; later years: by September 1. · Maine has its own form: Notice of Intent (online portal or paper form, Maine DOE). Send that; this letter can go with it as a cover note.
What Maine's law asks the notice to give: File a written Notice of Intent to Provide Home Instruction every year. In the first year, send it within 10 days of withdrawing from school, or by September 1 if starting in the fall. Later years, send it by September 1 with the prior year's assessment attached. One notice goes to both the resident superintendent and the state. Use the online portal or the paper form. Put each item in the details box, one a line.

- Read what to file in Maine: the To and By lines there are the ones these letters use, each linked to the law.
- Keep a copy, and send it a way you can prove: by hand with a dated receipt, by certified mail, or by email if the office accepts it.
- Taking a child out of school mid-year? See the Maine checklist for the order of steps.
