To: Principal of the public school your child would otherwise attend. · When: Before you start; homeschooling begins when you submit it. · Hawaii's own notice, with the lines its law lists: the letter of intent maker.
What Hawaii's law asks the notice to give: Before starting, give the principal of the public school your child would otherwise attend a notice of intent: the Department's Form 4140 or a letter with the child's name, address and telephone number, birthdate and grade level, and your signature. Homeschooling begins when you submit it. You do not have to send a new notice every year, but you must send one to the new school's principal if you move to another school's area or your child moves to a different school level (for example, elementary to middle school). Put each item in the details box, one a line.

Before you send it
- Read what to file in Hawaii: the To and By lines there are the ones these letters use, each linked to the law.
- Keep a copy, and send it a way you can prove: by hand with a dated receipt, by certified mail, or by email if the office accepts it.
- Taking a child out of school mid-year? See the Hawaii checklist for the order of steps.
