Which letter?

To: Georgia Department of Education (not the local district). · When: Within 30 days of starting, then by September 1 each year. · Georgia has its own form: Declaration of Intent (online, Georgia Department of Education). Send that; this letter can go with it as a cover note.

What Georgia's law asks the notice to give: File a Declaration of Intent with the Georgia Department of Education (not the local school district) within 30 days of starting a home study program, and by September 1 each year after. It lists each student's name and age, the program's address, the local school system and the 12-month period used as the school year. Submit it online, or by email, fax or mail. Put each item in the details box, one a line.

Before you send it

  • Read what to file in Georgia: the To and By lines there are the ones these letters use, each linked to the law.
  • Keep a copy, and send it a way you can prove: by hand with a dated receipt, by certified mail, or by email if the office accepts it.
  • Taking a child out of school mid-year? See the Georgia checklist for the order of steps.
