Secular mastery-based homeschool curricula, compared

9 programs, listed alphabetically, each with its grades, method, format and cost a year as the publisher’s own site showed them on October 29, 2026. Open a card for the strengths, the watch-outs and who it fits.

What this list holds

We label a program secular when the publisher's own pages call it secular, or describe the program and the publisher without any faith terms.

Mastery programs teach one skill until it is secure before moving to the next, instead of mixing many topics into each lesson.

At a glance

  • All 9 show a price on the publisher's site. For one child and one year of the main package they run from free to $1,188, and 1 is free.
  • How the child works: 5 books and workbooks, 1 on screen, 1 video lessons, 2 books and screen.
  • 6 of the 9 have a placement test or level guide on the publisher's site, linked on each card.
  • Grades: 7 reach pre-K or kindergarten, all reach the elementary grades, 6 reach middle school and 2 reach high school.

Each program in a line

  • All About Reading: A parent who wants a step-by-step, lightly scripted phonics program to teach one child at a time, including a child who finds reading hard.
  • All About Spelling: A parent who wants a scripted, step-by-step spelling program that explains the rules, for a child who already reads.
  • Beast Academy: A child who enjoys puzzles and hard problems, with a parent who is happy to let them wrestle with a question before stepping in.
  • Hooked on Phonics: A family with a child aged 3 to 8 who wants short app lessons that plan themselves, with real books and workbooks arriving by mail.
  • Khan Academy: A family that wants free, self-paced practice in math and other core subjects, with a parent who is happy to choose the courses and check progress on a dashboard.
  • Math Mammoth: A family on a tight budget that wants an open-and-go worktext the child can read and work through with growing independence.
  • Power Homeschool: A family that wants video teaching in every subject with grading and records done for them, and a child who can work on a screen while a parent checks in.
  • RightStart Mathematics: A parent who wants to teach math hands-on, with an abacus and card games, and is happy to lead a lesson each day.
  • Singapore Math: A parent willing to learn the material and teach each lesson, with a child who likes thinking problems through rather than repeating the same steps.

Before you buy

That label is the only thing these pages say about religion. If it matters to you, read the publisher's own pages.

Placement matters more than usual, because levels follow skills rather than grades. Ask how the program reviews earlier skills once they are mastered.

Most publishers post samples and a placement test; each card links the placement test where the publisher has one.

How we label

Every fact on a card was read on the publisher's own website on the date shown, and the page it came from is linked. A fact we could not confirm there is left out. Costs are for one child and one year of the main package, as the publisher's page showed them that day; prices and sales change. Method and format are the publisher's own description where it gives one. The only thing we say about religion is one label, secular or faith-based, given by the rule above; where the publisher's pages don't settle it, the card has no label.
