Umbrella schools, cover schools and church schools, explained
In some states a family can homeschool under a school instead of on its own. The school files or reports for you, and in return sets some rules. Whether that route exists depends on your state's law.
An umbrella or cover school is a private or church school that enrolls children taught at home, and handles some of the filing or reporting the state would otherwise ask of the family. Peabody's state law pages find 6 states whose law names such a route: Alabama, Arkansas, California, Maryland, South Carolina and Tennessee. What it changes differs by state, and by school.

This is a plain-words summary, not legal advice. Laws change: check your state's current law and its education department before you act.
Which states name the route, and what is it called there?
Each link opens the state's page: the route in the record's words, what you file on your own for comparison, the law's quote with its source, and ten questions to ask.
- Alabama: church school.
- Arkansas: private school or umbrella school.
- California: private school (including a home school).
- Maryland: supervision by a church school or an approved nonpublic school.
- South Carolina: joining a homeschool association.
- Tennessee: church-related umbrella school (category iv).
Does it change what I file?
It can. In Tennessee, the record says a family in a church-related umbrella school files no Intent to Home School form, and the school handles records, testing and the diploma. In Arkansas it changes nothing: the Department says a supplier calling itself an umbrella school does not remove the yearly notice. Read your state's page before you pay anyone.
What if my state isn't listed?
Then the record we checked names no umbrella route there. Many states have private schools, and some private schools enroll children taught at home; whether that counts as attendance is your state's law to say. What to file in your state is the place to start.
Should I keep my own records anyway?
Yes. If the school closes or you leave, your own copies are what you have. The free Record Book keeps attendance, hours, reading, grades and work samples on your device, and exports every list.
