Teaching music at home
Singing, listening, keeping a beat and picking an instrument, without a degree in music.
The National Core Arts Standards, which cover music alongside visual art, dance, theater and media arts, describe music learning as creating, performing, responding and connecting. At home that means singing, listening on purpose, clapping a steady beat, and learning one simple instrument, with a free app, a library lesson book or a local class.

This is a plain-words summary, not legal advice. Laws change: check your state's current law and its education department before you act.
A way to start
- Sing a song together every day.
- Listen to one piece and ask what it makes you think of.
- Clap or tap a steady beat to songs.
- Try one simple instrument (recorder, ukulele, keyboard) for ten minutes a day.
The free path
You don't have to be good at this to teach it
If you can sing along, you can teach early music. For an instrument, a local lesson or a library method book fills the gap.
Check your state
Some states list the subjects a homeschool must cover. See the law page for your state.
