Teaching life skills at home
Cooking, money, laundry, first aid and chores as real lessons, with records for the transcript.
Life skills such as cooking, handling money, doing laundry and first aid are a main reason many families homeschool, and they count as learning. Peabody's Kitchen has kid-tested recipes with safety built in. Pick one skill a month, teach it by doing it together, and log it. Older teens can list them as electives on the transcript.

This is a plain-words summary, not legal advice. Laws change: check your state's current law and its education department before you act.
A way to start
- Choose one skill a month.
- Show it, do it together, then let your child do it alone.
- Write it down on a checklist.
- Add it to the record.
The free path
You don't have to be good at this to teach it
You already do most of these. Let your child do them with you.
Check your state
Some states list the subjects a homeschool must cover. See the law page for your state.
