Teaching coding at home

Where to begin with block coding and logic puzzles, and when to move to a text language.

CSforALL is a group working to bring computer science education to all students, and it collects resources for teaching computing. Young children can learn the ideas, such as steps, loops and if-then, with unplugged games and block coding. Move to a text language like Python in the middle grades. Free courses exist, so you do not need to be a programmer.

A way to start

  1. Play an unplugged game: give a family member step-by-step directions to make a sandwich.
  2. Use a block coding course for ten minutes a day.
  3. Make a small project, like a quiz or an animation.
  4. Move to Python when typing and reading are solid.

You don't have to be good at this to teach it

Debugging is the lesson. Reading error messages together teaches more than knowing the answer.
