Teaching art at home
Making, looking and talking about it, with free coloring pages and a kid art studio.
The National Core Arts Standards cover dance, media arts, music, theatre and visual arts, and organize each around four processes: creating, performing or presenting, responding and connecting. At home that means making something, showing it, talking about art you see, and linking it to your life. You don't need to draw well; you need paper, time and interest in what your child made.

This is a plain-words summary, not legal advice. Laws change: check your state's current law and its education department before you act.
A way to start
- Set out paper and one material (crayons, paint, clay) and say little.
- Look at one painting together for two minutes, and describe it.
- Ask your child to tell you about what they made, without guessing what it is.
- Hang the work up.
The free path
You don't have to be good at this to teach it
Your job is to give time and materials and be interested. Skill comes from the child making lots of things.
Check your state
Some states list the subjects a homeschool must cover. See the law page for your state.
