Minnesota homeschool letter of intent

Fill in the report to the superintendent in your browser, check it against what the law asks, and print it. Nothing you type is stored or sent.

This is general information, not legal advice; check your state's own page. Laws change, and Minnesota's own statute and education department are the final word. The links below go straight to them.

What Minnesota's law asks for

Who it goes to
The superintendent of the school district where your child lives (not the state department)
When
By October 1 of the first year after age 7, or within 15 days of withdrawing; then a letter by October 1 each year
What it says
Each child's full name; Date of birth; Place of residence; The test you plan to use this year; Name of the person who will teach; How the teaching parent qualifies.Source: Minnesota Statutes 120A.24 Reporting (Revisor of Statutes)

The full rule, in plain words: Tell your resident school district's superintendent: the child's name, birth date and address, the name of each instructor with proof the instructor meets the law, and the annual test you plan to use. The first report is due by October 1 of the first school year the child is taught at home after turning seven, or within 15 days of withdrawing a child from public school after age seven. After that, send a letter of intent by October 1 each school year. Do not send it to the state department.

Where this comes from

Checked on October 29, 2026. This is general information, not legal advice. Laws and forms change; confirm a date with your school district or the state agency before you rely on it. For legal advice, ask a lawyer licensed in Minnesota; homeschool legal-help organizations and your state's homeschool groups can also point you to help. Something out of date? Tell us and we will fix it.
