GPA calculator for homeschool
Enter each course's credits and grade to get the unweighted and weighted GPA for every year and for all years together, and print a summary.
How your grades count
Extra points are added only to a passing grade (D or better). An F stays 0, and a passed pass/fail course (P) is left out of the average.
All years together
The all-years figure adds every year's quality points and credits and divides once. It is not the average of the yearly GPAs.

How the GPA is worked out
- Each letter becomes points: A is 4, B is 3, C is 2, D is 1, F is 0. With plus and minus on, a plus adds 0.3 and a minus takes away 0.3.
- Points are multiplied by the course's credits to give quality points. A half-credit A is worth 4 × 0.5 = 2.
- The GPA is total quality points divided by total credits.
- For the weighted GPA, an honors, AP or dual enrollment course earns the extra points you set before this step.
This is the method in HSLDA's guide, How to Calculate a Grade Point Average (GPA), which also says the all-years GPA is not an average of the yearly figures and that honors and AP courses earn more points; the exact bonus is the school's choice. Read October 28, 2026. A college or the NCAA may work out its own figure for its own purposes, so check the instructions of whoever will read your record.
How to use it
- Choose how plus and minus grades count, and how many extra points an honors, AP or dual enrollment course earns. Schools differ, so these are yours to set.
- Under each year, add the courses with their credits and the grade. Use P for a pass/fail course that is passed.
- Read the GPA for each year in the last row of its table, and the all-years GPA at the top.
- Press Print the GPA summary for a page with every course, the scale you used and a signature line.
Ideas for class
- Keep one record for each student: fill it in at the end of every semester so the transcript is never a scramble in senior year.
- Try both plus and minus settings to see how much the scale matters before you decide what your transcript will say.
- Check a college's or scholarship's own instructions: some ask for an unweighted figure, some for a weighted one, and some recalculate.
- Print the summary with the course descriptions and the credit record so the three documents agree.

Questions
How do I calculate a GPA?
Turn each letter grade into points (A is 4, B is 3, C is 2, D is 1, F is 0), multiply by the course's credits, add up those quality points, and divide by the total credits. A one-credit B and a half-credit A give (3 × 1 + 4 × 0.5) ÷ 1.5 = 3.33.
What is a weighted GPA?
A GPA where harder courses (honors, AP, sometimes dual enrollment) earn extra points on a passing grade, so an A in an honors course may count as 4.5. How much extra is the school's choice. Set yours above; the common starting points are 0.5 for honors and 1.0 for AP.
Is the all-years GPA the average of the yearly GPAs?
No. Add every year's quality points and credits and divide once. A year with more credits counts for more. This page does it that way.
How are pass/fail courses counted?
A passed pass/fail course (P) is left out of the average, and its credit still counts as earned. A failed one is an F: it counts with zero points and earns no credit.
Why are extra points not added to an F?
This page adds them only to passing grades, so a failed honors course is still 0. Say on your transcript how you weight.
