Do I have to tell the state that I'm homeschooling?
Asked by families. Answered by Peabody editors from the sources below.
It depends on the state. Of the 49 states in Peabody's checked state law pages, 23 ask for notice every year, 10 ask once, 5 ask for none and 7 make it optional; the rest vary. Each state's law page quotes the rule and links its statute.
Checked October 27, 2026.
This is a plain-words summary, not legal advice. Laws change: check your state's current law and its education department before you act.
